Hailing from a humble middle-class family in Patna, Bihar, Khan sir aka Faizal Khan faced several financial struggles during childhood. Born to a housewife mother and a contractor father working at different places, Faizal was determined to succeed since childhood. Faizal Khan had aspirations to join the Indian army and serve the nation. He managed to qualify for most of the tests but failed in medical because of a slight tilt in his hand which cast him as unfit to join the Indian Army. This slight setback did not deter him from his positive attitude towards life. Khan sir had always been fond of academics and passionate about teaching. So after graduating from Magadh University, he started his career as a teacher in Patna. 

With the aim of providing quality education to students from underprivileged backgrounds, he founded the Khan GS Research Centre in 2010. His unique teaching style quickly made him popular among the children. Six years after the establishment of the Khan GS Research Centre, in 2016 Faizal Khan founded the Khan Academy, which provides free online education to students across India.

Although quite popular in Patna, Khan Sir rose to prominence in 2019. When COVID-19 hit the world and everything got closed as a result of the Lockdown by the Government, his coaching in Patna was also closed. That is when he started a YouTube channel by the name Khan GS Research Centre and began uploading videos and teaching online on YouTube with a whiteboard. His unique way of teaching and making difficult topics easier and more interesting garnered him worldwide attention within the span of a few months.

This success led him to conduct both offline and online classes even after the pandemic was over. In 2021, he launched his app, offering online courses to students who were not able to come to the city to study offline. His channel, Khan GS Research Centre is currently the most subscribed educational YouTube channel in the country with over 23+ Million views and over 2.36+ Billion views. 

Khan Sir Coaching: Making Learning Accessible

One of the main reasons for Khan sir success story is his dedication to offering accessible learning. Despite several hurdles, he has been known for staying consistent with his vision even after garnering popularity and unprecedented success in the world of education. With his fame, he received many offers to put a stop to his free education mission, He was once offered a whopping rupee 107 crore, to quit his vision, which he declined standing with the financially weak but diligent students. Khan Sir coaching charges rupees 200 as a nominal fee. He is adamant about offering quality education to everyone, ensuring a level playing field for students despite their family’s financial standing.

When As much as his idea of affordable education for all was welcomed by the parents and students, his contemporary coaching institutes started getting worried about how is he teaching students at such a low cost. Khan Sir’s decision to provide affordable education concerned other coaching institutes that might affect their business. This led to them sending bombers to blast the Khan GS coaching center, in Patna. Three bombs were thrown at his coaching center, one of which entered his office. The bomb didn’t blast and Khan sir was saved. This hideous act only made his resolution stronger as he continued providing affordable education to this day. 

Khan Sir story: Controversies he found himself in

Like most success stories, Khan Sir success story is not without hurdles and controversies. He found himself on the radar of Netizens when he shared a video on France-Pakistan relations on 24 April 2021. Khan sir was accused of being Islamophobic due to his take on the topic. The controversy deepened further when some people on the internet questioned his legitimacy as a Muslim. Some claimed he was a Hindu named ‘Amit Singh’. An old picture of him celebrating the Hindu festival, Raksha Bandhan emerged. This entire situation led to him having to issue a clarification on YouTube.

Khan Sir found himself in another controversy in January of 2022, when an FIR was lodged against six teachers of different private coaching centers, including Khan Sir, and 16 others in connection with violent protests over the Railway Recruitment Board’s non-technical popular category (NTPC) examinations.

Is Khan Sir good for UPSC: The Internet’s opinion

There has been much discourse around Khan sir and whether his teaching is beneficial for UPSC preparations. As much as his classes are pretty decent when it comes to preparing for UPSC, it is always advised to study from various institutions and books when preparing for the exam. He is especially good if you are having trouble understanding a particular topic as he is known for breaking down complex topics into easily understandable bite-sized information.

UPSC has a vast syllabus and while completely depending on Khan sir for the preparation is not advised, one can adhere to him for help in current affairs and general studies. English medium students who don’t speak or understand Hindi might have difficulty understanding his lessons as he narrates them in Hindi. His books are also published in Hindi language.

Khan Sir is a passionate philanthropist. He is an avid animal lover. He has opened up a “Goshala” in Patna, where cows are taken care of. Khan sir has also built a library in Patna so that students can go and read whatever they love.
