Soon, Dubai will have the “world’s largest” airport terminal. The construction commencement has already come into action as per the ruler of Dubai. The official news regarding the same has already been made and the construction of the new terminal began on Sunday, 28 April 2024. This terminal will be constructed at AI Maktoum International Airport. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of the Gulf Emirate said in the official announcement that the terminal will be known as “the world’s largest” terminal. The estimated cost of this terminal will be approximately $35 billion.

Prime Minister and the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AI Maktoum made a tweet regarding the same which reads “We approved the designs for the new passenger terminal at AI Maktoum International Airport and (are) commencing construction of the building for AED 128 billion ($34.85 billion).” He further included that Dubai will be the “world’s airport, its port, its urban hub, and new global centre”. As per Dubai’s ruler, the new terminal project would assure the “continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn”.

As per Dubai’s government announcement, once the new terminal is fully functional, it will handle up to 260 million commuters yearly along with 400 aircraft gates. The new terminal will have the largest capacity in the world. Sheikh Mohammed further describes it as 5 times larger than the current Dubai International Airport. It is worth noting that Dubai International Airport is known to be one of the busiest airports all around the world.

“The Initial phase of the project will be concluded within 10 years, with a capacity to serve 150 million passengers annually”, said the president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO of Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed AI Maktoum. The CEO of Emirates announced that the airport will also become the new home of all airline partners that facilitate international connections to and from Dubai, as well as the flagship carrier Emirates and its low-cost counterpart Flydubai.

AI Maktoum Airport situated on the outskirts of the city has yet to lure the attention of a significant portion of the air traffic of Dubai since 2010. The Dubai government is also looking forward to replacing Dubai International Airport. The vision of the authorities is to accommodate up to 120 million passengers yearly but can’t expand because of its central location in the city.

Here are a few things that are making the multi-billion dollar project different from other airports:

As we mentioned above, the AI Maktoum International Airport will be known as the world’s largest capacity as it will accumulate 260 million passengers a year.

Once the construction of the new terminal is done, all the operations of the current Dubai International Airport will be shifted to the new project. The new multi-billion dollar project will be much larger as compared to the existing airport of Dubai.

The AI Maktoum International Airport will have 400 aircraft gates and 5 parallel runways. Furthermore, the aviation sector of Dubai will witness new aviation technologies.

Apart from that, the Dubai government is planning to build a whole city around the airport in Dubai South. Authorities believe that the new project in the country will increase the demand for housing.

Last but not least, The top logistics and aviation companies in the world will be based at the airport.
