Google’s Employee Shifts and Cost Cuts

Google Layoffs: Tech Giant cuts more Jobs

As stated by a company spokesperson on Wednesday, Google has laid off employees and shifted some roles to other locations of the company. This step has been taken amid cost cuts and reports have it saying that the layoffs are not made company-wide. It is also being said that the affected employees are eligible to switch over internal roles. However, the number of employees who have been impacted by this step is still unknown.

A smaller part of the company’s employees would be moved to other hubs the tech giant is investing in. These hubs include India, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dublin. The company spokesperson added, “Throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, remove layers, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities.” The media and tech industry have been facing a slew of job cuts, and these layoffs may continue to grapple with economic uncertainties.

Areas across which employees have been affected include real estate and finance departments, according to a report as described by a Business Insider report on Wednesday. The finance department incorporates Google’s treasury, business services, and revenue cash operations. A large number of employees were laid off by Alphabet-owned Google in January including the teams of engineering, hardware, and assistant teams as the tech giant welcomes investment and molds its artificial intelligence offerings. Google CEO Sundar Pichai had informed the company’s staff earlier at the beginning of the year to expect more job cuts.

Involving the matter of layoffs, the company set forth new restructuring plans. Google’s finance chief Ruth Porat in a memo shared that “The tech sector is in the midst of a tremendous platform shift with AI. As a company, this means we have the opportunity to make more helpful products for billions of users and provide faster solutions to our customers, but it also means we collectively have to make tough decisions, including how and where we work to align with our highest priority areas.” The note further said, “We are sad to say goodbye to some talented teammates and friends we care about, and we know this change is difficult.” The restructuring plan includes promoting growth in Bangalore, Mexico City, and Dublin, as per the report of Business Insider.

Tech Sector Layoffs in 2024

The March month of 2024 witnessed terrible layoffs, especially in the tech sector. The major reason for these layoffs is to curb the problem of cost-cutting to navigate through economic fluctuations and downfalls. Here are the top companies that dismissed their employees recently:

  1. Telecom giant of Sweden, Ericsson laid off about 1200 employees from its workforce because of the falling demand for 5G network equipment.
  2. Dell Technologies cut short its workforce due to broader cost-cutting measures. This also included limiting external hiring and reorganizing employees.
  3. Apple ceased its microLED project which led to the laying off of its huge workforce across the United States and Asia.
  4. IBM laid off individuals in the marketing and communications division.
