As we earlier mentioned above, the opposition party of Maldives is planning to impeach the president. It is worth noting that he held the position of President on 17th November 2023. However, he was appointed as the President of Maldives after former President Abdulla Yameen was imprisoned for committing corruption and found guilty in the wake of serious corruption charges. So, what has happened in just 2 months brought him into the news and the opposition process to impeach him.
According to the report, the development came into force after a parliamentary vote of approval for the existing government of Muizzu was broken on Sunday, 28th Feb 2024 and a fracas appeared in parliament. Now the latest report states that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is planning to present an impeachment proposal in parliament which will affect the existing government and the chances of fall will increase. It is worth noting that MDP holds a majority of seats in Parliament and the party recently stated that they have collected sufficient signatures to submit the motion.
As per local media reports, around 34 members of parliament including the representatives from both the Democrats and MDP have shown their support to the motion for the impeachment of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu. In addition to this, the main opposition party has planned to withhold the approval of the parliament for 4 members of the cabinet of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu ahead of the voting on the council. The opposition party has decided to refuse to cast the vote to approve the Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

The People’s National Congress (PNC), and the Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have stated that rejecting the approval of Parliament to the union of President Muizzu will be equivalent to halting the services the government provides to citizens. The local media reports further added that Pro-government MPs will protest against it if any obstruction comes their way. During the conflict, a fight broke out between Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa and Kanditheemu MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem Shaheem. The verbal spat turned into a physical altercation and both the members sustained injuries.
Minority leader Moosa Siraj stepped between the physical altercation and tried to stop. After that Shaheem was admitted to the hospital. The video of the physical fight has been posted online and it is currently trending on several social media platforms. After watching this bizarre moment, the opposition has decided to process impeachment against Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.
