The crash occurred due to technical defect; Pilot safe, no loss of life reported

On Monday, 02 August 2024, an Indian Air Force’s (IAF) MiG-29 fighter jet crashed near Barmer, Rajasthan. The Indian Air Force went to X and informed that the incident occurred during a routine night training mission in the Barmer sector when the fighter jet encountered a technical defect leading to the pilot ejecting on time. The IAF further added that the pilot was safe and no loss of life or property took place. A court of inquiry has been ordered on this MiG 29 jet crashes case.

MiG 29 jet crashes: IAF posts on X informing of the crash

The Indian Air Force took to X (formerly known as Twitter)  and posted, “During a routine night training mission in Barmer sector, an IAF MiG-29 encountered a critical technical snag, forcing the pilot to eject. The pilot is safe and no loss of life or property was reported. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered.”

Narendra Meena, the SP of Barmer stated that the incident took place around 9:50 pm in a village just about 10-15 kilometers from the Uttarlai Air Force Station in Barmer. He said, “The aircraft crashed in a village and caught fire. Fire tenders took time to reach the spot as there is no access road,”. The SP informed that fire brigades got delayed to reach the site as there was rainwater near the mig 29 aircraft crash site. Meena further added that no loss of life or private property had been reported in the MiG 29 crash. SP Narendra Meena, Barmer collector Nishant Jain, and other senior officers reached the mig 29 fighter jet crash site shortly after the incident to inspect the probable damages.  

Earlier reported crashes of this year

We have seen many similar crashes this year. A snag-hit helicopter being towed to Gauchar for repairs by an MI-17 chopper of the Indian Air Force crashed in the hills near Kedarnath on August 31st, 2024. Thankfully no casualties took place as the helicopter was unoccupied.  A similar incident took place earlier this year, in June when a Sukhoi fighter plane crashed at a farm in Niphad taluka of Nashik. In the Pokhran area of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, an object fell from an IAF fighter aircraft on August 21, 2o24. This could have become a fatal incident but luckily the incident occurred in an isolated area and there was no damage to life or property. On June 4th, 2024  the IAF’s Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet crashed near Shirasgaon village of Niphad tehsil in Nashik at around 1.20 pm.No loss of life was informed of this crash either as both the pilot and co-pilot had ejected safely. According to the reports, the aircraft had caught fire which was extinguished. The impact of the fall was such that some parts of the jet were scattered over a 500-meter radius. Another such incident took place in March 2024, when a Tejas aircraft crashed near Jaisalmer during an operational training sortie. Thankfully the pilot had ejected safely before the crash.
