This day falls every year on 28 February with a new theme to raise awareness about the importance of science in our lives.

With the commemoration of the day we also acknowledge the efforts of the scientists who worked and are constantly working to make individuals’ lives easy and effective with the help of scientific technology. Those who are dedicatedly involved in science and technology know the importance of Science Day but many are surely unaware of the history and significance of this day. The main reason behind celebrating National Science Day is to pay tribute to renowned Indian scientist and physician Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman. This day is remembered to honour the discovery of the “Raman Effect” which was discovered on 28 February 1928.

When Was National Science Day Started To Celebrate

The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Government of India to designate 28 February as “National Science Day” in 1986. Every year since 1987, 28 February is marked “National Science Day” with a new theme. The event is now commemorated all over India in schools, universities, colleges and other academic, technical, scientific, medical and research institutions. On the occasion of NSD, many activities have happened in educational institutions.

What Is The Theme Of National Science Day 2024

The theme for NSD changes every year and mainly focuses on numerous aspects of science and technology. This year, National Science Day falls on Wednesday. The theme of this year is “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat” and it was declared by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister. This year, the theme is focusing on promoting as well as raising awareness about the self-made innovations and discoveries that can pave the way for scientific progress in India.

What Is the Raman Effect

On 28 February 1928, the Nobel Prize-winning Physicist Sir C V Raman discovered the “Raman Effect”. It was the discovery of a light beam passing through a transparent material that scatters in a way that reveals details about the molecular structure of the material. Simply said, The Raman Effect is when light changes direction and energy as it passes through a transparent material. National Science Day is a special day to celebrate the “Raman Effect” and its impact. For the discovery of the “Raman Effect” and its significant contribution to the field of Physics, Sir C V Raman was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. He was the first Asian to be honored with this award.
