The generative Claude AI market is expanding by the day. AI chatbots have taken the world by a whirl, stirring various conversations. From the possibility of it being a threat to a million job holders to the possibility of a fall in the demand for artists and story writers, AI has raised many questions in our minds. Despite the cause, the effect is clear, AI is the new hot topic of the world. Among the noise, two names have emerged with particular buzz around them. Claude AI and ChatGPT pose as the front-runners of the generative AI scene. Before we understand how they differ from each other, let’s have a look at what they are:

What is Claude AI?

Claude AI is an I assistant from Anthropic. Anthropic is an AI safety and research company. In simple words, Claude AI is an artificial intelligence chatbot.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a generative AI-driven natural language processing chatbot developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT has a sibling model called InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.

On paper. These two are identical but we aim to find in what ways Claude AI differs from ChatGPT.

Claude AI comparatively is a recent member of the generative AI clan, but has very quickly made a reputation for itself due to its emphasis on AI safety. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI executives, with a clear vision in their mind, a generative AI with reduced risk.

Anthropic launched the Clause 3 model family, in March of 2024. This series includes three versions intended to target different user needs:

  • Claude 3 Opus
  • Claude 3 Sonnet
  • Claude 3 Haiku

These models differ in price and purpose. Opus is suggested for strategy, research, and other complicated tasks. Sonnet is recommended for time-saving tasks like data processing and code generation. Haiku’s response time dynamic makes it fit for tasks requiring efficiency like customer support, inventory management, etc. The downsides of the Claude model include its inability to generate images and browse the internet.

Anthropic’s focus on minimizing AI risk led the company to create models with foundational principles that intend to align the model’s actions with human values. The attention to safety delivered by the company might lead to its assistance being restricted and unsatisfactory in some cases.

ChatGPT is currently the most recognized chatbot. Launched in the year 2022, ChatGPT garnered a lot of buzz since its initial days due to its user-friendly features and effective language abilities. The knowledge range of ChatGPT made it a useful tool for students and professionals alike.

OpenAI has a wider spectrum of models under its umbrella. From LLMs( Large Language Models) like ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT-3.5 which are also available as web versions of themself, to image generators like Dall-E and speech-to-text model, Whisper.ChatGPT 4 in itself is quite an advanced model, providing web browsing, image generation, and voice interaction. ChatGPT 3.5 is the free version of the web app, and poses as the faster model compared to ChatGPT 4 but lacks some features like internet browsing and lags with a knowledge cutoff of 2021.

Claude is more human towards its approach than ChatGPT. But ChatGPT’s free option is much better both in terms of operation and quality. Claude AI takes a kinder approach in its answers and it shows the makers’ efforts to make a constitutional AI. ChatGPT’s approach of using headers to break the text serves the users looking for a quick overview of a particular subject matter. Claude excels in larger context text analysis so much so that it can read a short novel and give you the key pointers. ChatGPT excels in creative writing and conversation. Claude AI is more factual and informative as compared to ChatGPT which is relatively casual, conversational, and engaging. Claude AI requires clear prompts and instructions. ChatGPT can easily navigate through open-ended conversations and creative prompts.

Conclusion

While ChatGPT paved the way for generative AIs, Claude’s approach has placed it right beside ChatGPT in the list of competitors. Both of these generative AIs are a great assistant but not always as reliable as you would like them to be. They have a history of providing wrong and insensible answers sometimes.

Apart from them, there are a range of other AI tools each offering their own unique experience. Bard developed by Google AI is a great contender in the market. Jurassic-1 by Al21 and GPT-J-6B are on the list as well. Bloom and Megatron are also great options.

Claude AI mainly differs from ChatGPT in its approach which is highly focused on risk reduction. It performs better regarding legal queries than general creative ones. It cannot replace ChatGPT yet but it sure is a great alternative to ChatGPT.
