Surat and Indore Win Swachh Survekshan Awards-2023 for Cleanest Cities in India

The Cleanest Cities in India 2024 Revealed- Indore and Surat Bagged the Top Positions in Ranking.

One of the oldest countries in the world, India is ahead of all sides. From technology to the largest economy in the world, India is surpassing many countries. Despite having all kinds of progressive developments, other parts of countries have always belittled India for its cleanliness. Many NRIs have always compared India with their residing nation and stated that India is one of the polluting countries and that Indians are messy and muddy. However, the Annual Cleanness Survey of the Indian Government has proved this wrong and issued data which shows the cleanliness culture of many states of the country.

The Annual Cleanliness Survey of India has marked Maharashtra as the cleanest state in India. Whereas the award of the Swachh Survekshan Awards-2023 for the cleanest cities in India went to Surat and Indore. This award ceremony was held on Thursday, 11th January 2024 at the Bharat Mandapam. President of India, Droupadi Murmu has distributed the awards. Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri also attended the event along with other ministers. Speaking about the award of the cleanest city in India, Indore has won this accolade for the 7th time in a row whereas Surat city has bagged this award for the first time which proves that cities are seriously taking the Swach Bharat Abhiyan laid by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.

The list of Top 10 Best Performing Indian States:

1st: Maharashtra

2nd: Madhya Pradesh

3rd: Chhattisgarh

4th: Odisha

5th: Telangana

6th: Andhra Pradesh

7th: Punjab

8th: Gujarat

9th: Uttar Pradesh

10th: Tamil Nadu

Despite winning the award of the cleanest state in India, the city of Maharashtra, Navi Mumbai has failed to attain the first and second positions in terms of clean city. Just like last year, Navi Mumbai has again attained the 3rd position. Now that we have talked about top cities in terms of cleanliness, it is time to talk about those cities who attained lowest rank in the category of million-plus population. Haorah (Howrah) city of West Bengal stand at the last position in this category, Kolkata and Asansol performed closely at the worst-performing cities on the cleanliness indicators. The 4th and 5th position of the worst-cities has taken by Haryana: Faridabad and Tamil Nadu: Madurai.

1st: Indore, Madhya Pradesh

2nd: Surat, Gujarat

3rd: Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra

4th: Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

5th: Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

6th: Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

7th: NDMC, New Delhi

8th: Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

9th: Greater Hyderabad, Telangana

10th: Pune, Maharashtra

Out of 446 cities, The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) attained 90th position whereas the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) attained the 7th position. One of the major projects of the Narendra Modi administration’s first few years in office was the Swachh Bharat programme, which is centered around the Swachh Survekshan survey. In the category of urban centers, Saswad, located in Maharashtra has won the accolade of cleanest city. Whereas the 2nd position was held by Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavla in Maharashtra attained the 3rd position in the same category.

Apart from it, Prayagraj and Varanasi won the title of the cleanest Ganga towns. It is worth noting that the largest global survey, Swachh Survekshan initiative was effected since 2016 by the ministry of housing and urban affairs. The aim of this award is to promote a healthy competition among cities and states in terms of cleanness. As per data, 4,447 urban local bodies participated in the Swachh Survekshan 2023.
